Candie Hawk "Groucho Running " Review
Candie Hank, the alter ego of Berlin-based Patric Catani (aka Patric Cremer), has clearly found the sounds of global travel can be inspiring on this scrapbook pastiche of a travelogue.
An odd mix of obscure samples and drum ‘n’ bass beats, Groucho Running allows Spanish train announcements, screeching tires, and a high-pitched operatic vocal to dominate this invitation to dance. The majority of songs rely on too many odd samples to be particularly danceable, even if they’re interesting. Still, tracks like “We All Go Die Tonite” and “Groucho Won’t Die” would do well in any eclectic d ‘n’ b DJ’s box, even if (perhaps because) their titles sound a bit fatalistic. McClain Johnson
