Miranda Lambert 1/31/08 House of Blues
Miranda Lambert displayed confidence and a playful vengeance as she swaggered around the House of Blues stage January 31st. Lambert’s latest release; “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” was the best country album of 2007. 10 of the shows 19 songs came from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” Onstage, the songs hit harder. The rockers showed that she would be just as willing to start a bar fight (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) as longing for love (“Desperation”). Lyrics, like those from “Gunpowder and Lead,” (“His fist is big/but my gun is bigger/He’ll find out when I pull the trigger), kept the crowd fired up all night long.
Despite the badass persona she sometimes displays onstage, Lambert joked with the crowd all night. Before “Dry Town,” she teased, “a dry town is something y’all obviously don’t know anything about.” A fan threw her Mardi Gras beads and she strutted around with them around her neck during “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.”
Two of the covers played displayed the wide range of her sound. She used the Faces’ “Stay With Me” to introduce her band. She surprised the crowd with a solo acoustic cover of Merle Haggard’s “The Way I Am.” Whether ballad or country rocker, Lambert’s voice was evocative and filled with emotion all night. Lambert closed out the show with a rollicking version of “Kerosene.”
With a commanding stage-presence, great songs, and emotive voice, Miranda Lambert is a breath of fresh air in contemporary country.
