The Hives Spreading:
An Interview With Guitarist
Nicholaus Arson
Nicholaus Arson is the guitarist for Swedish rock
group the Hives. They create music filled with a raw energy, unlike much of
the rest of today’s “rock’ music. The Hives latest release is "Tyrannosaurus
Hives," out now on Interscope Records. Nicholaus recently wrote in to discuss
his favorite guitarists, why the Hives are the best band in the world, and
X-ray vision.
You call yourselves “the greatest band in the
world.” What makes you the best?
A headstart in talent and taste.
What's one rumor about the Hives that you would
like to clear up?
Clearing up rumors is for dorks. We deny nothing.
What song do you feel best describes the Hives
sound?
Maybe “Die, Alright!”
What's the biggest misconception about Sweden?
That we live in snow huts, marry young and eat polar bears for
breakfast.
Do you have a favorite Swedish band?
The Barbwires amongst others.
How long did it take you to create “Hate to Say
I Told You So?"
Not too long I guess. Running more on instinct there.
Do you follow a certain process when creating your
music?
Lot's of rehearsing and fairly quick recording sessions.
Did you follow a different process when recording “Tyrannosaurus
Hives?"
Not really. Still record live and then fuck up the sounds as much as possible.
What was the hardest aspect of
making the transition from an independent record label to a major
label?
There wasn't really a transition in that way. We do things pretty much as
we used to.
Do you remember your first gig with the Hives?
Think so. Or at least one of the first. At a youth center I think.
You used to have fistfights onstage, describer the
worst fight.
Just a bit of kicking and punching in Germany.
If you could tour with any band, who would it be?
Right now I'd like to tour with AC/DC or The Cramps.
Who are your top three guitarists of all time?
Cordell Jackson
Yngwie Malmsteen
East bay Ray
Angus and Malcolm Young
I’m afraid the list goes on.
What’s the worst trend in rock?
Rock that isn't rock.
Do you have a quote or motto that you live by?
If it sucks, it can't be good.
Do you have any hidden talents?
X-ray vision.
The Hives have been together for over ten years (since
1993); do you have a favorite memory?
It's all one long memory and it ain't over yet.
What's the key to keeping a band together for so long?
Try not to suck too bad cause nobody wants to be in a bad band.
What do you want the Hives to be remembered for?
Being the best band, saving rock as we know it, nice sleeves etc yadda yadda
yadda.
Do you have anything else that you would like to add
or comment on?
Yeah. If it says The Hives on it it's good. All you need to know for the future
kids.
